How to Detect Plumbing Problems

The plumbing in your home is often taken for granted, much like the electrical system. Some homeowners do not understand the logic or the systems that it takes to maintain and prevent plumbing problems before they start. Usually, it takes having a major pipe problem or cracked pipe before homeowners pay attention to the plumbing in their house. But by that time, plumbing repairs can be at an astronomical price for the homeowner. To help you avoid being the homeowner that spends thousands of dollars on a plumbing repair, we have a developed a few ways that you can protect your plumbing.

Don’t ignore clogged drains. When you’re maintaining your plumbing in your home, you will face daily plumbing problems. You may deal with the occasional clogged drain every once-in-a-while, but don’t ignore your clogged drains. A simple clogged drain can cause stress on the pipe structure in your home.

Keep your pipes cleaned. You can keep your pipes clean in your kitchen by making sure that you’re not pouring grease, fats, or oils (including cooking oil and butter) down the drain. Most of the time when you pour grease, fats, or oils down your kitchen drain it will eventually coagulate inside of the drain, meaning that you will have a clogged drain. Also, understanding how to use your garbage disposal can help save your drain. When you use the garbage disposal, you should turn on the water on before and after running the garbage disposal. Turning on your water for 15 seconds after using your garbage disposal, can help rinse out debris in the main line. Consider not putting foods such as banana peels, celery, potatoes, and cucumber peels in your garage disposal these foods are difficult for your garbage disposal to process. In your bathroom, try and reduce your use of bath oils and avoid using chemical removal products. Don’t flush tampons, diapers, and other things that could clog your toilet when you flush it.

Check your drains weekly. A plumbing leak usually starts slow, but it can quickly get out of control. It’s a good idea to do a weekly inspection of your pipes to see if you can find any mold growth, puddles of water, or musty smells near your pipes. If you do find a puddle of water or mold growth near your pipes, then you probably have a leak somewhere. Try and check your drains frequently, to make sure that they are draining properly. If your sink fills up with bubbles, then that’s a sign that the drain is draining slower than intended. Always check your faucets handles and pipe valves to make sure no water is leaking from them. Maintaining a healthy plumbing system in your home can seem time-consuming, and can be frustrating at times. It’s important that you schedule your semi-annually maintenance with a licensed plumber, to detect any leaks or cracked pipes in your home.
