Things to Know Before Buying a Washable HVAC Filter

Your HVAC system’s overall efficiency is directly impacted by the type of air filter you select because it is responsible for capturing airborne particles that can harm both your health and expensive system components.

If you’re one of the many homeowners who uses disposable HVAC filters, you might be unsure whether a washable filter is appropriate for your home. Let’s find out!

Key Takeaways:

  • Disposable air filters should be changed every 30-60 days.
  • Washable filters are more expensive but last much longer than disposable options.
  • Washable air filters have a MERV rating of 1-4, which means they can capture particles that are larger than 10 microns including pollen, dust mites, and lint.

Different Types of Air Filters

To decide if a washable air filter is best for your home, we first have to discuss what types of air filters are available.

Disposable Fiberglass Air Filters

The fiberglass mesh used in these traditional flat-panel filters is stretched over a cardboard support structure. As air moves through the fiberglass mesh, debris is collected.

Disposable fiberglass filters are the most common and affordable type of air filter, but they must be replaced at least every 30-60 days to maintain HVAC efficiency.

Washable Mechanical HVAC Air Filters

Particle buildup can be removed from washable or reusable filters by rinsing or vacuuming them clean. For maximum particle capture, they are typically composed of woven polypropylene media and are electrostatically charged.

Because they can be reused, washable air filters are more environmentally friendly than other filters, but they are more expensive.

Disposable Pleated Air Filters

Like their fiberglass counterparts, disposable pleated HVAC filters are single-use, but they are constructed differently. Since there are multiple layers, there is greater surface area to trap particles in pleated filters composed of pleated cotton or plastic fibers.

Remember, disposal pleated air filters cannot be washed or reused.

HEPA Air Filters

HEPA stands for “High-Efficiency Particulate Air.” These filters are highly effective at removing particles that are 0.3 microns or larger from the air. (That’s tiny!)

In medical settings like clinics, hospitals, and labs where clean air is crucial, HEPA filters are most commonly utilized. It’s crucial to remember that high-density HEPA filters can be very expensive and that not all HVAC systems can handle them.

You can buy HEPA filters in washable or disposable options.

UV HVAC Filters

UV HVAC air filters are not made of fiberglass, cotton, or plastic. Instead, UV filters utilize ultraviolet light to get eliminate airborne debris, including germs, viruses, and microorganisms like mold.

These kinds of filters are often used to supplement other types of air filtration systems.

Why Choose a Washable Air Filter?

Now that we have a basic understanding of the different types of HVAC air filters, we can now discuss the benefits of washable air filters.

Washable air filters are becoming increasingly popular as people look for ways to save money and reduce their impact on the environment. There are several benefits to using these kinds of air filters including:

#1. Energy Efficiency

Washable air filters have a MERV rating of 1-4, which means that the filter can capture particles that are larger than 10 microns. Pollen, dust mites, and lint are all 10 or more microns in size, so a washable filter will prevent these particles from circulating through your HVAC system.

When your system is free of debris, it has greater

efficiency and better performance.

#2. Environmental Impact

Since you are washing your air filter once every month or two to be reused again and again, you are lessening your impact on the environment. Some air filters can take a long time to break down in a landfill depending on what they are made out of.

#4. Savings

A well-maintained washable HVAC filter can last 5-10 years before needing to be replaced. Think about how many disposable filters you might use in this timeframe! That is A LOT of savings!

Though washable air filters are more expensive to purchase than disposable options, their benefits far outweigh their cons.

Minimize Strain On Your AC System This Summer with These Tips

The heat of summer is just around the corner, which means it’s time to talk about how to keep your AC system running smoothly during the hottest part of the year. Because let’s be honest, there’s nothing like the peace of mind knowing that your HVAC is keeping you cool when it’s so hot outside!

Keep scrolling to learn how to minimize the strain on your air conditioning system this summer with tips from our 5-star team at Best Home Services.

Keep Cool This Summer

To prevent unexpected HVAC breakdowns make sure to follow these tips!

Don’t Let the Temperature Rise: Why You Should Leave the AC On

You might believe that turning off your air conditioner when you leave will reduce your energy costs. Even so, turning off your air conditioner completely makes it work harder when you switch it back on to reach the temperature you’ve set.

Plus, turning your AC off completely increases the humidity levels in your home, creating moisture issues on our particularly hot and humid Southwest Florida days

If you are looking for the best way to save money and keep your home cool, investing in a smart or programmable thermostat is a great option.

Smart thermostats allow you to regulate the temperature of your home while you are away for the day while still giving your bank account a break. It’s simple. Set the thermostat to raise the temperature slightly while you are away at work, and then, lower it again before you arrive home.

Keep Windows and Doors Shut

If you leave your windows or doors open, it allows hot air inside. Your unit will work harder than it has to if you let additional hot, humid air into your house, especially during Florida’s sweltering summers when it already has to work double time to keep your space cool.

It is also important to note that keeping windows and doors open can allow allergens and pollutants to enter your home and cause all kinds of air quality problems as they circulate throughout your space.

Change Your Air Filters Regularly

Less airflow due to clogged air filters means that your HVAC system will have to work harder to move air around your home, putting unnecessary strain on the equipment.

Dirty air filters restrict airflow and can put your HVAC system at risk of a frozen evaporator coil or stress on the blower motor.

We recommend changing your air filters every 30-60 days.

Don’t Shut Too Many Air Registers in Your Home

Your home’s ducting system is intended to circulate a specified volume of air at a particular pressure through the ducts, so for it to function properly, air vent registers must be left open.

The amount of cool air your system produces won’t be reduced by closing air registers in empty rooms; instead, your system will have to work harder to move the air that is already flowing through it.

Shutting air registers in unused rooms won’t reduce the amount of cool air that your system creates, it just means that your system will have to work harder to move the air that is passing through the system.

Making your HVAC system work harder is the last thing you need during a hot Southwest Florida summer!

Schedule Seasonal HVAC Maintenance

When you schedule seasonal HVAC maintenance, our team at Best Home Services will inspect all vital components of the system including the evaporator and condenser coils, ensuring that everything is working properly. We suggest having your HVAC system inspected and maintained twice a year; once in the spring, and again in the fall.

Remember, a little bit of maintenance can keep you from experiencing unexpected breakdowns and major repairs in the future!

Why Isn’t My HVAC Working?

Don’t worry, we’re some of the best at figuring it out…

Unlike most of the country, we use our air conditioners year-round here in Southwest Florida! So when they break down on a warm day during a Florida winter, it can be annoying, to say the least!

The good news is that whether the fix is easy or complex, our team at Best Home Services is here to help. But before you give us a call, our pros recommend trying these easy troubleshooting tips!

#1. Is your AC unit plugged in and the breaker on? They need power to run.

#2. Check the thermostat. Is it on and the batteries working?

#3. Inspect your outdoor condenser. You may need to clear the area of leaves or weeds.

#4. Is the filter clean? Think about it, when was the last time you changed the filter…

If you’ve gone through this list or don’t have time to figure it out, don’t worry. You can call our local team of experts to come to solve why your HVAC unit isn’t working properly. But if you want to try to troubleshoot the unit, scroll down for more how-tos.

HVAC Troubleshooting Tips

If your air conditioning system is not working, there could be many reasons such as a dirty air filter, or low refrigerant. But before you panic, consider doing some sleuthing of your own; you might just find that what’s wrong with your HVAC is a very easy fix!

#1. Is Your AC Unit Plugged In?

This might sound silly, but stranger things have happened! If your air conditioner isn’t working at all, it might not be receiving any power at all! First, check your home’s main electrical panel to ensure that your system has a working supply of power, you might just need to simply reset a breaker. If that’s not it, check to see if the unit is plugged in.

If the breaker seems to be tripping regularly, contact our experienced electrical technicians at Best Home Services, as this is likely an issue with your home’s electrical system and not your HVAC system

#2. Check the Thermostat

Another common culprit of an HVAC that isn’t working is the thermostat, but luckily that is a simple fix! Your thermostat might be turned off or its batteries might need to be replaced.

Remember to check that your thermostat is set to “Cool.” We know that this seems too obvious, but trust us, we’ve seen it happen before!

#3. Inspect the Outdoor Condenser

If your air conditioner is running but isn’t blowing enough cool air to sufficiently cool your home, it’s time to inspect your condenser. The outside condenser unit may occasionally become dirty, blocked by weeds, grass, leaves, or pollen, and cease to operate effectively.

If this is the case, clear anything that might be in the way. We like to recommend a minimum of three feet of clearance around the unit for optimal airflow.

After cleaning the outside condenser, let the AC run for a couple of hours and see if the airflow issues improve. If not, the problem might be elsewhere in the system and it’s time to call in an experienced technician from Best Home Services.

#4. Is the Filter Clean?

We cannot stress the importance of regularly cleaning or replacing the air filters in your HVAC unit enough. Dirty or clogged air filters will block the flow of cool air throughout your entire system and cause your HVAC system to work way harder than it needs to.

Many HVAC units also have a built-in system that engages when the air filter is too clogged to prevent damage to your HVAC system, so if your AC won’t run at all, try changing the air filter first.

Simple seasonal HVAC maintenance can reduce equipment breakdowns by as much as 95%! Contact Best Home Services to schedule your seasonal HVAC maintenance appointment today—844-921-2833!

My AC Is STILL Not Working!

If you’ve tried everything above, and you are still having issues with your HVAC, the problem is likely a little more complicated. It could be that:

  • The air conditioning coils could be iced over, affecting the compressor, and restricting the airflow to your unit.
  • The coils on either the indoor or outdoor units could be dirty.
  • You could have a refrigerant leak.
  • The drip pan could be full.
  • The compressor has failed completely.
  • Or more!
